Aranui Community Centre
The Aranui Wainoni Community Centre was the first community development to be constructed in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, since the major earthquakes of 2010/2011. The new community centre replaced both the Aranui Wainoni Family Centre and the Aranui Community Hall (previously located on Breezes Road) which were both demolished due to earthquake damage.
The purpose-built centre sits on the site of the demolished Aranui Wainoni Family Centre at 31 Hampshire Street in Aranui. The 967 square metre building has sports facilities, meeting and office spaces and kitchen facilities. It includes impressive features such as retractable seating, a bamboo sprung floor and indoor and outdoor stages. The facility has function facilities and back of house catering.
The project was built on a 1.2m gravel raft with concrete slab. The building had inscribed precast panels that were decorative features. The building was externally clad with ribbed steel and the structure was portal spanning steelwork for open plan activities.
The Aranui Wainoni Community Centre won the “Public Sector Project of the Year” award at the Project Management Institute of NZ Annual Awards in 2016.
