The Nellie Nightingale library has sat near the sea front for nearly 40 years, with the constant sea air and summer sunshine beating down some partial upgrading and remodelling were required. Works included a new roof over the foyer, new staff workroom, new carpet and tiles, mechanical and electrical upgrades, along with painting & decorating, plus alterations to the public toilets. An accessible ramp was also constructed on the northern side of the building to ensure the building is available to all.

The Nellie Nightingale Memorial Library was reopened by the Nelson City Mayor on 15^th October 2017 for residents and visitors to Nelson to use.
