Retail Property Award Winner: Countdown Rototuna

Watts & Hughes were selected as the main contractor to carry out the new 4,000m2 Countdown store construction in Rototuna, Hamilton.

The site is located in a residential zone and required significant ground remediation prior to commencing the building substructure. The ground remediation required an under cut across the entire building platform by an average of 1.2m.

The project duration was shortened at Contract award, based on the award letter was issued later than the that reflected in the tender programme and that the client still expected the tender completion still to be achieved.

The project was heavily affected by client driven concept changes, which was the main reason for the financial variation from tender.

The project has been completed to the latest and newest designed finishes i.e. concrete polished floor, Fagerhalt lighting, Philips retail dimmable lights, updated wall finishes.

The project experienced various challenges with the concept changes, neighbour contractor and Covid-19. The project was completed within Covid-19 level 4 and was also subsequently completed a couple of days earlier than the actual contractual completion date of the 15/04/2020.
