SCION Research Upgrade of Laboratories
This project entailed extensions, alterations and fitout to the existing facility.
The remainder of the facility had to remain operational for the duration of the project while fully stripping out one wing of the building, extending this section down the one 100 m-long face of the building and fully refitting the building.
The project included a significant amount of services works including the installation of five types of gasses, mechanical ventilation, extraction, fire protection, electrical services and the like. $700,000 of laboratory equipment and furniture also had to be fitted.
140 contract instructions were issued, resulting in 90 variations to the contract. The projects original value was increased by approximately $250,000 + GST.
The project was delayed in the early stages due to the late arrival of specialist equipment from overseas. Once this had been noted, our project team fully re-programmed and re-organised to work around this delay and the last half of the programme was amended to incorporate an accelerated programme. This resulted in the effect of the delay being significantly reduced and the revised agreed completion date was achieved successfully.
With the accelerated programme, defects were kept to a minimum and the quality of the final completed project is extremely high. Watts & Hughes is proud to include this project as an example of the high quality that we can achieve and the ability and expertise of our staff and sub-contractors. The client was extremely happy with the outcomes we achieved.
